Premiere November 10, 2009
Instrumentation for mixed choir, soloists, cl, bs, hn, trp, perc, vi1, vc

The premiere cast contained youths aged 14-19, some without any acting or singing experience. Phillip Barczewski (aged 21 at that time) conducted, Almut Fischer directed and Krüs trained the kids to be vocally up to the task. The text was a transcription of Ad de Bont's youth theatre play. With this many roles (all those Greek gods...) it was perfect to get many young people to join this project. Ten students of the Weimar Musik Hochschule formed the chamber orchestra.
Krüs used sound effects to create an 'Island' atmosphere with birds, wind, sea, footsteps on the beach - and the cracking of wood of Odysseus’ vessel.
Since Odysseus left the isle of Ithaca 20 years have gone by. No sign of his return. His wife Penelope knows deep in her heart that he will be back someday, but their son Telemachos, who has never seen his father, has his doubts. After a discussion with het father Zeus, the goddess Athene disguises herself and tells Telemachos that Odysseus will return soon. All the while Odysseus lingers with Kalypso, but feels that he has to leave her and go home.
Antinoos, a rich man in love with Penelope, thinks that after all these years Odysseus is not coming back and threatens to kill Telemachos if Penelope does not marry him. She prepares herself for the wedding by weaving her wedding dress, but unravels it every night to start all over again the next morning.
Luckily Odysseus returns in time to prevent the wedding and forgives Antinoos.
